Lesson Horses

Canterbury Farm’s Lesson Horses

Our school horses are ideal for teaching children, adults and people who have fear issues about riding.

Ladybug’s Reckless Ruby

Ladybug's Reckless Ruby Lesson Horse

Ladybug's Reckless Ruby

Ruby is a 15.2 hand sorrel mare with a flax mane and tail. She was born in 1991 and is a registered Tennessee Walking Horse. Ruby is big and solid with a comfortable gait and a gentle, willing disposition. She tends to be bossy with other horses, but she is always friendly and respectful towards people, especially children. Ruby is a safe, solid, consistent performer, and because of this, she is the first lesson horse we use on the farm for beginners.

Her mother was a versatility champion and Ruby herself has done quite well at shows and trail obstacle events. Ruby is a great teacher for those have fears and inhibitions. She knows what she is doing so well, that if the student makes a mistake, she stops what she is doing and waits for the proper instructions. Ruby has a remarkable gift for teaching and her students always shower her with peppermints after a lesson.

Chance’s Awesome Gal

Awes under saddle.

Awes under saddle.

Awes is a gorgeous horse – her blue eyes and black and white markings are truly striking. She is equally beautiful in motion and is incredibly sensitive and responsive. She was born in 1995, and at 15.3 hands, she has a solid build and is an extremely powerful horse.

Awes is triple registered as a Tennessee Walking Horse, Spotted Saddle Horse, and Racking Horse. Due to her incredible conformation, she has been bred twice, and is mother to Zia and Ellie, who also reside on the farm.

Awes has an imposing presence, making her a valuable asset in teaching students to overcome fear in the round pen. She is also incredibly responsive and is a respectful horse who appreciates strong leadership.

Redbud’s Sissy, Velvet

Velvet in a Bitless Bridle

Velvet in a Bitless Bridle

Velvet is a 15.1 hand bay mare who was born in 1997. She is a registered Tennessee Walking Horse. Velvet is Paula’s personal riding horse, and she is invaluabe in our training program. Velvet loves to go on trail rides, and her primary job is to keep other horses calm while they are in trail riding training. She is extremely responsive to leg pressure, so we use her to show people what ‘lightness’ feels like.

Velvet has been shown, but doesn’t enjoy ring work as she is easily bored. She can often be seen with her ears back for some reason or another, but in actuality she is a very sweet horse. She has been trained for trail obstacle classes and she enjoys it and does very well. She is one of those horses that is unflappable and will always keep you safe.

When we lived on the Chesapeake, Paula spent Hurricane Isabel in the barn aisle with her eating potato chips. Velvet was unimpressed. Velvet has had one baby (Joe) and was our first mother on the farm.

Awesome Blue Elegance, Ellie

Ellie

Ellie

Ellie was just born on our farm in 2008 to Awes and is a registered Tennessee Walking Horse.

She was for sale for the first three or four months of her life but then she was named and we decided to keep her. She is the sweetest foal we have ever been around. Ellie practiced dressage all day in the pastures when she was very young, and now she keeps herself busy pestering the older horses in the field. We can’t wait to see what her other gifts are!
